media 160, artist statement

I am interested in the unknown. That is the least amount of words I could use to describe my interests as an artist without sounding dreadfully dull to the reader. I tend to not want to be specific and more general because my interests are subject to change. However since we are required to discuss our interests at a greater length I will thus elaborate. The unknown can apply so many subjects I am interested in. The biggest is mystery. I often like to apply this to people.
My main interest is why people do the things they do. I am also interested in if how they were raised affects them at all and if so how much it affects them. Often people who are mysterious or situations in history that are also mysterious invoke my interest and therefore much of my writing is about people in different situations. My drawings also reflect this. Often the drawings will go along with my writings.
I also like the use of metaphor and double meanings in my work. Anything with an explicit meaning and then an underlying implicit meaning I find fascinating. The double meanings could be anywhere, in a song or in a movie. I like to visualize that double meaning and then draw it. I also like to apply that if I am writing a script or a story.
Every word a character says can be written to say something about that character. If you pay attention enough, that character’s true intent could be clear to the reader but not so obvious to the other characters in the story. I also enjoy putting all these elements together by using photography and eventually converting it to film. I would then want to edit the film and choose the music for the score.

This Media class I'd say was somewhat educational. In truth, I already knew some of the material because of a previous course I took at another college but that class I did not know the credits could be used for media. However, I did learn some more about HTML, and also learned about CSS which I did not know about. I would have liked to have been able to edit some of the photo projects and some of the video projects, but I understand that was not part of the course curriculum. I did like the photo project and the "dark" theme even though we were not allowed to edit. The project helped me to realize that New York City is really a good place to shoot material for that particular theme. This course was also graded fairly, and the objectives were explained clearly. The course sets one up for the next class. The group work for projects was helpful and I found I learned more in a group for these particular projects in the course.

Post 10

The field trip to "Democracy Now" was very educational for media majors, especially those interested in television. The "behind the scenes" experience really allowed students to observe how news shows or live shows in general are conducted. I observed on the table in the station, a schedule of what questions the news anchor are supposed to ask the guests. It was interesting to see how right before the show they were still editing the clip they were going to be showing on the news program that day. The sound booth also looked very interesting. Everyone working there seemed friendly and surprisingly more relaxed than one would expect a news team to be, especially minutes before a broadcast.
It was also interesting to watch the guests enter and watch the show from behind the glass wall while it was going on and also from the monitor.

The show was running too long at the end because one guest spoke too long, but that is the nature of the news business. The most important part of the trip, in my opinion, was being told stories and personal experiences from Amy Goodman, the award winning anchor of the show. She told of a time when her and her cameraman went to an island off the coast of Indonesia to expose the massacre of the natives by Indonesian soldiers armed with U.S. military guns. The guns were given to the Indonesian army in exchange for the U.S. to continue their "shoe" business in Indonesia. The massacres were going on without the American public knowing. Amy Goodwin and her cameraman were the only Americans that knew and were held at gun point for interfering. They later escaped and once back in the U.S. held a press conference, exposing the whole cover up.The only reason they survived was because of her quick wit. This story proved that one person standing up for the truth can still make a difference.

This ad design works because it gets your attention. Normal stairs in public areas are usually mundane and people walk on them all the time. When this ad is there it can grab their attention. The ad itself is also interesting and holds their attention. The picture of the mountain leads people to be curious as to why it is there and then at the bottom is the line, "for some it's mount everest", asking the question, what then, is it for everyone else? Then the line right after explains that and the ad is over. It is not overly complicated and it's innovative design communicates the message quickly and sufficiently.

This image I was interested in a while ago, particularly when I was feeling quite cynical about men in general. However I have since then changed my point of view, and instead view this image with a sort of nostalgic viewpoint, one that says, "thank God this doesn't apply to everyone anymore". But objectively, what does it mean? Were the words put up intentionally? Or did the guys just happen upon it? Do they agree, or find it amusing? If you recognize the guys that could further the mystery even more.
